I let my laziness prevent me from doing this entry last week. Oops. I don’t have a real excuse, other than I just wasn’t very motivated to write it. What makes it really pathetic is that I spent an insane amount of time online last week, but couldn’t spare five minutes for my blog. There’s just something about summer (or late spring) that makes you want to sit and do nothing. 😀
Operation Smile is a non-profit organization that repairs cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities for children around the world, free of charge. Founded in 1982 by Dr. William “Bill’ Magee and his wife Kathy when the couple took a group of medical volunteers to the Philippines to assist children with cleft lips and palates. During this trip, the group realized how large the need for such surgeries was in the Philippines and around the world, and thus, Operation Smile was created. Based in Norfolk, Virginia, the organization has expanded its operations to more than thirty countries, and currently runs volunteer and physician training programs aimed at educating medical professionals and assisting more children in need. In 2003, Operation Smile teamed up with singer/actress Jessica Simpson, naming her a Smile Ambassador for the organization. She has attended a number of medical missions in Kenya and India, and launched her own education initiative, called A Beautiful Me, which seeks to encourage young people to use their voices to change the world.
